Overview:
The Controller is a key position within an organization’s accounting or finance department. This role is responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of financial statements, managing the accounting team, and implementing financial control procedures. The Controller ensures the company is compliant with regulations and assists in financial planning and strategy.
Main Dutities:
- Oversee all accounting operations including Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Payroll, and General Ledger.
- Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Assist in budget planning and financial forecasting.
- Coordinate internal and external audits.
- Monitor internal controls to ensure compliance with accounting procedures.
- Evaluate and improve accounting and financial processes.
- Manage the accounting team and provide training as needed.
- Work closely with executive management on financial decision-making.
- Liaise with external stakeholders, such as tax professionals, auditors, and legal teams.
- Analyze cash flow, cost control, and financial statements to pinpoint areas for improvement.
Education and Qualifications Needed:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Professional certifications such as CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CMA (Certified Management Accountant) are highly preferred.
- Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Knowledge of accounting and financial software systems.
Experience Needed:
- A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in accounting or finance, with a few years specifically in a supervisory or management role.
- Experience with financial statement preparation, budgeting, and forecasting.
- Knowledge of tax laws and regulations.
- Experience in implementing or operating under internal controls and accounting systems.
Place in the Organization:
The Controller typically reports to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) or directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in smaller organizations. They may oversee various accounting and finance teams and work closely with other departments such as Human Resources, Operations, and IT.
